FATBIKE TOURS

Have you ever had this MAD thought that it would be cool to cycle on a beach with ease? Well the time is HERE!! And we are now offering Fatbike tours at the Roundhouse!!!!

‘Fatbike’ Meaning

(source Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatbike)

A fatbike also named wide tire bike is a bicycle with over-sized tyres, typically 4 inches or larger and rims 65 mm or wider, that are designed for riding on soft unstable terrain such as snow and sand. These bikes are built around frames with wide forks and stays to accommodate the wide rims required to fit these tires.
History

Fatbikes were invented for winter trail riding and racing in sub-arctic Alaska and simultaneously, for touring the deserts of New Mexico. They are very versatile bikes, capable of riding on any terrain which includes: snow, sand, desert, bogs and mud as well as normal mountain biking terrain. The original fatbike was ridden in 1986 across the Sahara using fat tires prototypes from Michelin.

In December 2012 Eric Larsen (Polar Explorer) attempted to ride a fatbike to the South Pole. He made it a quarter of the way before he had to turn around. In 2013/2014 there were three cycling expeditions to the South Pole. Maria Leijerstam became the first to cycle to the South Pole, across the South Pole Traverse road on a tricycle with fatbike tires. Juan Menéndez Granados skied and rode a fatbike to the South Pole. On 21 January 2014 Daniel P. Burton became the first person to ride a bike across Antarctica to the South Pole.

Experience required?

If you can ride a bike then you are there already! You will realise after just 2 minutes on a fatbike how easy it is and the limitations are virtually non-existent! The bikes are a little different to steer but are quick to get used to.

Level of Fitness required?

If you can ride on a normal mountain bike trail then you will be fine. You will need to be relatively fit and able to do the trails but we ride slowly so don’t worry if you get tired as it is about enjoying the ride and not a race.

When do you offer these trips?

We run year-round but the riding will be most fun in our Summer months (October – May) with hot sunny days mostly. Our Great White Sharks are here all year round but peak Season is our winter from June – September when the visibility is better underwater and water warmer. The Whales come into the bay from July – December.

Where can I buy a Fatbike?

We have preferential rates from an excellent vendor and should you wish to buy a Fatbike after your stay we can put an order in for you including any personal requirements for the look and feel of the bike

SAND DUNES TRAIL – STUNNING RIDE FROM THE MOUNTAIN DOWN TO THE BEACH

R650 per person (2 Hours) This is the ultimate ride from near Grootbos nature reserve down the mountain to the top of the Sand Dunes. The trail to the dunes is special, running on a narrow sandy horse trail through the Fynbos.

When reaching the dunes we will make our way up and across to reach a fantastic downhill section where we will pick up speed before reaching the top of our first vertical dune face. After a briefing on how to ride down the dune we will take turns riding down the face. It may feel impossible and dangerous to do but the ride is in fact very controlled and the sand will slow the bike down. What your mid tells you is impossible will in fact be very enjoyable and easy. Learn how to slalom like a skier but on a bike in a safe environment on the sand. This is excellent fun on a bike and not too difficult to achieve. After the dunes we will pick up a 4×4 trail down to the beach where the vehicle will be waiting.

• Fatbike
• High Quality Photos of the tour
• Helmet
• Water
• Nature reserve entry

THE EPIC! – THE EPIC IS A BLEND OF BOTH THE DUNES AND THE RIDE TO HERMANUS (Summer Only)

The EPIC R950pp (3-5 Hours) The Epic is a fantastic all-round for the fit biker wanting to blend both the Sand Dunes trail with the De Kelders to Hermanus Trail. This epic tour starts at our base in De Kelders where we will drive to the top of the trail for the Dunes. We will then spend around 1 hour on the dunes exploring all of the steep dunes and stunning scenery. The dunes have a whole range of slopes to try out different skills from steep faces to long slopes excellent for Slalom. After the fun on the Dunes we will hit the 4×4 trail down to Die Plaat and then cycle on the 20km stretch to Grotto Beach in Hermanus. We will then stop for refreshments at Grotto Beach before loading up the bikes and returning to De Kelders / Gansbaai by car or your accommodation in Hermanus.
