About The Roundhouse

It was December 2000 Dave Caravias began his business adventure in Gansbaai, South Africa with a clear idea of the design and the building of The Roundhouse Guesthouse.

During the build, the house quickly became known to locals as the Roundhouse, and for obvious reasons that name stuck.

The building was a huge attraction to the locals as it’s so different and is still the most photographed building in the area. We still get locals regularly that just want to walk through the house and see how practical The Roundhouse actually is inside.

The guesthouse is situated in de Kelders , which is the prime land-based whale watching area in the world for Southern Right Whales.

The Roundhouse is a three-story high round building with a thatched roof. The house has a very modern African feel and every care has been taken to assure your complete relaxation and comfort rated four stars but with many five stars finishes.

The house has unique features such as a guest lounge on the top floor with panoramic views, rooftop Jacuzzi, pool and games room with Table Tennis and Pool table with free wireless hotspot throughout the premises.

The suites, which consist of a bedroom, living room and bathroom, kitchen facilities including a microwave, toaster, coffee/tea facilities, bar fridge, television, DVD player, stereo, hairdryer, sewing kit, first aid kit, toiletries and more.

We offer a lovely Buffet Breakfast with Muesli, Natural Yoghurt, Breads, Rolls, Muffins, Cheese, Fruit Salad, Traditional Borewors, Bacon and eggs of your choice. Tea and Coffee and Juice.

Note that you have a stunning sea view from the top floor but all of our rooms except one are on the ground floor. Our Carcharias 1 Suite has great views from the first floor with a wrap around balcony. You are welcome in the upstairs lounge area at any time. After a long day out, relaxing in the Jacuzzi with a glass of wine while you enjoy the sunset, Whales and stunning views of the bay.

Shark Bookings

After a few months of operating The Roundhouse Guesthouse as a B&B, I decided to expand the company and enter into the ever-growing diving and travel industry of South Africa. My focus was on the Gansbaai area, and this saw the birth of Sharkbookings.com.

www.sharkbookings.com is a dive specialist for shark diving countrywide as well as international destinations. Sharkbookings acts as a central website and booking office where travellers can browse and easily learn about sharks, Shark Diving Companies and Shark Diving trips.

I am passionate about sharks and quality diving with big animals and I want everyone to get the best from their experiences, as I have done in the past.

My first diving experience was in Gansbaai in 2000. That day I saw eight sharks and even had the nose of the Great White inside the cage. This experience was very special to me as I had been obsessed with sharks since a little boy thanks to the film, Jaws. Meeting the Great White Shark face to face was an inspiring moment, never to be forgotten.

Thanks to the film Jaws, Great White Sharks are now admired and are on the wanted list to view and photograph for 60,000+ tourists every year. This has developed into a huge industry now with eight licensed operators in Gansbaai and three in False Bay. Great White Shark cage diving is the second most popular wildlife activity in South Africa, it’s an exhilarating activity not to be missed when visiting the country.

Fatbike Tours

In December 2014 I bought the very first Fatbike that came in to the area and took off with my phone and Google Earth. After weeks of riding and exploring I figured out that the spectacular dunes field in De Kelders was the perfect place to show people on a bike. The Grootbos horse tours had been using the dunes for many years and I found an old trail that had been used in previous years which made the dunes easily accessible. I launched my tours in March 2015 and slowly built up the fleet of bikes to the 15 I have now. My tours are absolutely spectacular and proudly the No.1 outdoor activity in Gansbaai on Trip Advisor. The tours are for all levels and from age 8 years old and downhill so easy and fun. Many clients tell us that this was the best activity they had done in South Africa and definitely a ‘Not To Be Missed’ activity when visiting the area.
